FAQs For Semester in Japan
What level do I need to join the semester program?
None at all.
Our semester in Japan accepts students from complete beginners (N5) right through to advanced levels (N2 and above).
You’ll be placed in a class that matches your current ability from day one, so you’re always learning at the right pace.
Never bored, never overwhelmed.
I’m over 30, am I too old to partake?
Absolutely not! Our semester program welcomes students of all ages and backgrounds.
Whilst semesters are normally associated with university students, at LTL all ages are welcome.
Is there much for me to do outside of class?
There certainly is.
We are fully prepared every week.
Our staff produce a list of weekly social activities which students can partake in at their own free will. These range from visits to our favourite restaurants and bars, to trips to museums, art districts and much more.
When will I have classes?
All of our classes take place Monday to Friday, typically in the mornings.
During busy periods, group classes may also run in the afternoon.
The set class times cannot be changed; however, we are happy to help you switch to a different group class if there is space available.
Which is better, Tokyo or Osaka?
Both are excellent, and the right choice depends on what you want from your time in Japan.
Tokyo is the obvious choice if you want a fast-paced, cosmopolitan experience with world-class transport links and endless things to explore.
Osaka is warmer, more relaxed, and arguably has better food. It’s also slightly more affordable day-to-day.
We run the same program in both cities, so the decision really comes down to the lifestyle you’re after.
How long is a semester in Japan?
Our semester program runs for 18 weeks.
This gives you enough time to move through JLPT levels, build real conversational confidence, and actually settle into life in Tokyo or Osaka rather than just passing through.
BONUS || you can study two back-to-back semesters in Japan to make the ultimate gap year experience!
Can I study for multiple semesters?
Yes you can.
Our semester program runs for 18 weeks but if you wish you can also study for 36 weeks and double up.
Why will I progress quicker at LTL compared to university?
Small class sizes are crucial to this. Imagine being in a class of 15 or 30, you can’t speak up. Your teacher cannot correct you.
There is no personal focus. With us there is. You will form a close bond with your teacher(s) and they will get to know your strengths and weaknesses. Don’t underestimate those extra 5/10 minutes per class as well.
55 minutes compared to 45 minutes make a huge difference over a Semester.
We compared language school vs university studying here.
How many people will be in my class?
This will change according to what time of year you come and how busy the school is, but the class size is between 3 and 10 students depending on the destination you choose.
Are language programs in Japan better than online?
For pure speed of progress, yes, and it’s not particularly close.
Online study is flexible and a great supplement, but immersion forces you to use Japanese in real, unpredictable situations that no app or online class can replicate.
Ordering food, navigating the metro, chatting with your host family, every moment outside the classroom is a lesson.
We also offer online Japanese classes through Flexi Classes if you want to prepare before you arrive or continue after you leave.
